Life on SeaLand

One of my professors showed the class a Youtube video of a nation called SeaLand.

I found this to be very interesting. Seven forts were setup during WWII several sea miles away from Europe in order to portal and secure the sea borders of the United Kingdom. After the war many of the ports were demolished, only 4 remain. SeaLand is the only fort that is inhabited. It was occupied in September of 1967 by Major Paddy Roy Bates. He initially used the platform for a radio broadcast station. Less than 10 years later, Bates introduced a constitution for Sealand, followed by a flag, a national anthem, a currency and passports. Now Bates son Michael Bates is the Prince of Sealand who put it up for sale.

Weird but true.

Check it out. Red bull holds a skateboarding event at Sealand:

What is New Media?

The new media is filled with new technologies such as pda smart phones, laptops, and the ipod touch. These technological gadgets help the media follow you wherever you go. Majority of the people who own a cell phone have internet access from it allowing them to access mobile versions of practically every site of their liking. People are able to read the news and even watch certain TV programs from their cellphones thruogh the use of a recent feature Sprint added to their service SprintTV. As mentioned in the article "Who Needs a TV? I’m Watching on a Laptop ," by Laura M. Holson, New York Times, December 3, 2008; Laptops are replacing cable TV. Almost every single tv that comes out is capable of being hooked up to a pc or laptop. Most movies and shows that are broadcasted on cablevision can be viewed online for free and a lot of people seem to be using this method for their source of television, which is free by the way.

The internet is extremely important to the new media. It allows the user to experience and explore the media globally with out leaving their domain. Through the internet people are granted to read, watch, and listen to any thing that they would want when they want it.

The new media is enhancing the old media with something as simple as allowing the people to experience and communicate with the whole world while sitting in front of their computer. I believe that the new media allows people to explore their curiosities in ways that weren't even imagined decades ago.
